Half Term Madness at the RAF Museum

Standard

So recently I have been trying to volunteer in as many museums as possible in order to gain a wide range of expertise.

Last week I was lucky enough to be selected to volunteer at the RAF Museum London, to help out with the educational activities running during half term.

Over the half term period the museum was running several educational activities for children and families. Such as the “Big Draw” event and the “Make and Take” Airfix activity.

Big draw is a campaign to get children involved in drawing, it became a register charity in 2000, and every October more than 1100 events take place across the UK. At the RAF the Big Draw event was combined with there initiative to recreate scenes from the past. For that reason children were asked to draw a self portrait (to add to our crowd), and to draw or colour in a plane (to add to our ‘sky’), effectively recreating a airshow! This event was very popular and those that chose to draw their own planes created very imaginative and creative drawings.

The “Make and Take” Airfix activity was equally popular, with many young boys queuing up with dads and grandpas to make a model. As you may imagine it was more popular with the boys, but several girls also took part. This activity was slightly more complex and tricky, the instructions given were not too clear and the pieces were very small. In the end the volunteers decided it would be beneficial to make our own planes, so we understood how to make them and could therefore answer any questions that might come our way (plus it ment we got to join in!!! Always fun!)

All in all my experience at the RAF was very enjoyable, I gained so,e great expeirence and made some great contacts, I hope to come back and volunteer more!
